Debating Workshop

Friday, November 6th, 2009

This November we will have a debating workshop delivered by Sarah Hudson. She began working for the State Department of Education and Training in Australia in 2001, teaching and adjudicating competitive debating and public speaking for teachers and students in scores of schools throughout New South Wales. The last three years have seen her teaching courses in these subjects for Helsinki and Espoo adult education centres in Finland. She feels that the benefits of learning to debate are amazing – and her students tell her so too – learning to debate helps you state your mind more clearly, write better essays, plan better projects and hold better dinner parties. And she doesn’t believe in boring teaching…

This workshop is for both new debaters and for those who want to brush up on the basics. It’ll be a fun and light-hearted session, but will also be very practical in terms of learning and practising the debating essentials.
We’ll review the foundations of debating, looking at how a good debate should work, how to set one up (definition, locating the central issues and drawing the boundaries for argumentation) how to use your preparation time effectively, how to structure your team’s case and arguments, and producing effective rebuttal. You’ll spend the time workshopping your skills in teams, playing useful games and generally uncovering the joys of constructing a logical argument. After this workshop you’ll be so rational in your arguments that no one will dare challenge you over the dirty dishes ever again….All welcome!

Make sure you’ll mark it in your calendar: Thursday November 19th at 18:00 in Cajsa (New Student House, Mannerheimintie 5b, 4th floor).

Entrance: 3 EUR.

Don’t miss it!
