The University of Helsinki Debating Society is happy to invite you to a show debate held on the 14th of February at 18.30 in Mannerheim-sali, Uusi Ylioppilastalo (Mannerheimintie 5 A, 5th floor).
There will be a short introduction to British Parliamentary debating, and we will also have a great group of experienced members present demonstrating what parliament debating is like in practise.
Our society has been organizing weekly debating events and taking part in debating tournaments world wide since 2001. We have no restrictions for new members, so no matter which school you attend, you are more than welcome to join us.
Our goal is to have passionate debates about different kinds of topics. Some of them are more topical, related to recent events in the world politics, and some are concerned with the fundamentals of our understanding of life.
The best part of debating is that it forces you to challenge your own understanding of different issues. Sometimes you have defend something that you have no faith in, and sometimes your job might be to find the opposing arguments to an issue that you saw no reason to oppose in the first place. Therefore debating gives you an opportunity to see the complexity of issues and look beyond the obvious. In the end debating is an art of argumentation, which improves not only your ability to think, but also your ability to share your thoughts with others as coherently as possible.
Our society organizes debates in English in the British Parliamentary Debating Format, which is the most common way of debating in universities world wide. To find out a bit more about the rules of debating, take a look our website: http://www.helsinkidebating.org/debating/
