Debate on Tuesday 13th of September

Greetings!
On Tuesday we will have the next debate of this fall. The location is the same as this week, so we shall meet at Lakki (Domus Gaudium, Mechelininkatu 3C, 1st floor) at 18.30. This week we had some interested new visitors, and we hope to see you guys and more new faces on next Tuesday too.
The plan is to have an interesting debate and a good time. Everyone is invited, so if you’re just keen on finding out what debating is all about, come and have a look!

The First debate of the semester on Tuesday 6th of September

Tuesday is the day for the first debate of this fall. The time is the same as last year, so we will start around 18.30. For the next few weeks we will be debating in Lakki, which is located at Domus Gaudium (Mechelininkatu 3C, 1st floor).

It doesn’t matter whether you are a new or an old member, or just someone interested in finding out what debating is really about, come and join us!

After the formalities, meaning the debate, we’ll continue the evening in another location nearby!

Autumn is here! New and exciting things are happening in Helsinki!

Leaves are slowly starting to fall and it is time to get back to campus. The debating society will also have an exciting autumn ahead.

On Monday 5th of September we will be representing ourselves at the university’s opening carnival at Porthania (Yliopistonkatu 3). We will be there from 2 o’clock until 6 o’clock. The rumor has it that some of us might even show our faces at HYY’s party the same evening.

Quite soon we will also organise a show debate for the new and the old students who are interested in debating but don’t really know what it’s all about. We’ll post information about this soon!

Another interesting idea for this fall came from Oulu. We got an email from their debating society suggesting that we should host a debating tournament in Finland. We think that this is a fantastic idea and we’ll post more when we know more!

The final debate of this semester – Tuesday 31st of May

Dear members of the University of Helsinki Debating Society,

spring brings beginnings and endings and Tuesday is the day to gather in Cajsa at Uusi Ylioppilastalo for the final debate of this semester. It has been such a fun and productive year at the society so let’s start our summer break with a good debate! The motions-master Anna has promised a to give us an interesting and maybe even a bit more relaxing topic.

As usual, we’ll start at 18.30 and after the debate we shall continue the evening in a different location nearby.

Whether you are a newcomer or an old member, come and join us!

Weekly debate on 17th of May

I hope to see many of you at tomorrow’s debate! As usual, we will be starting at 18.30 and this time we’ll be in Cajsa, at Uusi ylioppilastalo.

After the debate we’ll propably continue to a bar to debate about the debate. In reality, it’s just gonna be some beers and more fun!

Weekly debate on Tuesday 26th of April

We will have our weekly debate on this Tuesday in Lakki (Mechelininkatu 3C, 1st floor). We will proceed as usual; we’ll be there at 18.30 and the motion will be announced 15 minutes before the debate. Since we have some new people interested in debating, we’ll probably continue with the 5 minutes speeches.

After an exciting debate, we will continue the evening in a bit more comfortable venue. Bar Nolla was tested last time and since it was fairly popular, we might be staying there this time too.

Debate on Tuesday 29th of March

We want to invite everyone to join our weekly debate on Tuesday at 18.30 in Aurora (Mannerheimintie 5B, 3rd floor). The speeches will last for seven minutes and the motion – which will hopefully be super exciting – is announced 15 minutes before the debate.

Last time we had two newbies debating with us, and we hope to see some of that same action this week too! But no worries people, it is perfectly acceptable just to lean back and chill out.

After debating, we’ll continue the less formal part of the evening in the bar downstairs!.

Debating on Tuesday 22nd of March

We will have our weekly debate on Tuesday at 18.30 in Flora (Mannerheimintie 5B, 3rd floor) and everyone is invited! The speeches will last for 7 minutes and the motion will be announced 15 minutes before the debate.

After a delightful (and a terribly exciting) hour, we’ll continue the evening in the bar downstairs.
